Making fabric shapes by hand and by machine

1/9/2015

Today, Crafty STEMs learned how fabric appliques are made by hand and by machine.

Our project involved making 22 7" snowflakes by hand for a Frozen quilt that will eventually hang in the Media Center. Club members traced designs onto paper-backed fusible web, which Mrs Kent fused to fabric with an iron.  Students then experienced the fine art of cutting intricate shapes under the watchful eye of Ms. LaCroix.  Most quickly learned that going slowly and cutting with small, sharp scissors are the keys to accurate cutting.  To complete the process, students selected background fabrics for their snowflakes, to which Mrs. Kent fused the completed snowflake design.

Next steps:  Mrs. Kent will stitch around the snowflake shapes prior to our next meeting.  Club members will help decide the final arrangement of the snowflakes on the quilt border.
