Grief resources for children

On Wednesday, a letter went home in your child's green folder discussing the sudden death of a staff member's adult child who was a familiar face at Hayes.  To assist you in speaking with your child about this sensitive topic, the Media Center offers a collection of books that staff and parents may check-out. Please see a member of the Media Staff to access this collection.

Please remember that you are always welcome (and strongly encouraged) to reach out to your child's grade level professional school counselor for additional assistance.

Recommended books (reviewed by both media specialist and school counselor):

For all ages:

The Fall of Freddie the Leaf:  A Story of Life for All Ages by Leo Buscaglia.

Geranium Morning by E. Sandy Powell

The Memory String by Eve Bunting

When Someone Very Special Dies by Marge Heegaard

I Miss You by Pat Thomas

Sad Isn't Bad:  A Good-Grief Guidebook for Kids Dealing with Loss by: Michaelene Mundy

For older kids (grades 3-5)

Tear Soup by Pat Schwiebert and Chuck DeKlyen
